Kashat Spices is a family-run Middle Eastern spice company in Madison Heights, Michigan, that opened to the public in 2010 with two family blends and now makes a full line of eighteen, ground fresh and hand-mixed in small batches. The recipes behind those blends have been perfected for over 30 years, first for a select clientele, then for the public.

We are not a large factory and we do not want to be. We are a family that has cooked Iraqi and Chaldean food for a long time, and we blend spices the way we would want them in our own kitchen.

This post is our story in plain terms: where the recipes came from, how the line grew, what small-batch means in practice, and what you can expect when you order from us.

What is Kashat Spices?

Kashat Spices is a small-batch spice blender based in Madison Heights, Michigan, serving Metro Detroit and shipping across multiple states. We make eighteen house blends rooted in Iraqi, Chaldean and broader Middle Eastern cooking, and we sell around 60 single spices and herbs alongside them.

Everything is ground fresh in-house and hand-mixed in small batches, with no artificial preservatives or additives. That is the whole method. There is no secret beyond fresh spices, family recipes and care.

How did Kashat Spices start?

Kashat Spices started with family recipes that had been refined over more than 30 years for a select clientele before we ever sold a jar to the public. The blends were made for people who already knew what the food should taste like, so the standard was high from the beginning.

In 2010 we launched Kashat Spices to the public with two blends. That was the whole catalog. Two recipes the family trusted, made in small amounts and sold to people in Metro Detroit who wanted the real flavor of the dishes they grew up with.

How did two blends become eighteen?

The line grew one blend at a time, as customers asked for the seasonings behind other dishes from the same table. Today the family line covers most of the Iraqi and Middle Eastern kitchen: Baharat 7 Spice, Chicken Shawarma, Beef Gus Shawarma, Koozi, Kuba, Kufta, Kabob, Dolma, Falefel, Busterma, Beryani, Kalacha, Butnich, four curries, Chicken Season, Fish Seasoning, Lemon Pepper, Pickling Spice and Season Salt.

You will notice the spellings are our family’s, not the ones in most cookbooks. Koozi for quzi, Kuba for kubba, Falefel for falafel, Kalacha for kleicha. We kept them because they are how the dishes were said in our home.

If you are new to us, three good places to start are our Baharat 7 Spice, which works on almost anything, our Chicken Shawarma blend, and our Curry Mild for an Iraqi-style curry.

What does small-batch mean in practice?

Small-batch means we grind and mix in quantities we can watch and taste, rather than running large volumes that sit in a warehouse. In practice that changes three things about the jar you receive.

Fresher spices

Ground spices lose aroma from the moment they are milled. Because we grind in-house and mix in small batches, the spices in a Kashat blend have not been ground and sitting for a long stretch before they reach you. Fresh grinding is the single biggest reason a blend smells the way it should when you open the lid.

Hand-mixed consistency

Hand-mixing means a person, not a hopper, is responsible for every batch. It is slower, and it is the reason our blends taste the same from one jar to the next. The recipe does not change, and neither does the attention.

Nothing extra

Our blends contain no artificial preservatives or additives. What is on the label is spice. A blend made this way asks a little more of you on storage, kept sealed, cool and dark, and gives back a lot more in flavor.
