Description
Oregano is grown in the warmer climates of western and southwestern Eurasia and in the Mediterranean region. It has a slightly bitter taste with a hint of sweetness along with a warm aromatic flavor.
Oregano didn’t become popular in the United States until after the Second World War, when the soldiers returning from war raved about a “pizza herb” that they had tasted in southern Italy. After that it became a staple ingredient for Italian-American cuisine.
Oregano is mostly used in Italian dishes, especially in tomato sauces and on pizza. It is also a great spice for roasting, grilling, or fried vegetables, meat and fish. Oregano also works as a substitute for thyme or marjoram.
